Q: Why should I purchase a wind garland?
A: By contributing to the wind garland project, you’re helping shift the energy around the Kincade Fires into an atmosphere of community healing and environmental awareness.
Q: Where were the greens sourced?
A: The greens in every garland are recovered branches that were blown down by the Diablo winds that fueled the Kincade Fire. They were gathered by neighbors from their trees on their private land in Forestville as part of storm clean-up (these were not wildcrafted). The trees are part of a second-growth redwood forest that has been growing for the last 100 years since the land was clear-cut by loggers. Many of the branches fell from hundreds of feet up and belonged to unique ecosystems that only exist within the redwood canopy.
Q: Where will the money go?
A: 100% of the earnings will go towards restorative organizations in Sonoma County. 75% of the earnings generated will support Lost In Forestville, a project dedicated to the care of the natural world and the wilderness within. 20% will be donated to UndocuFund, a fire relief fund to assist the undocumented victims of the Kincade Fire who are otherwise left behind. The remaining 5% will be donated to Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, a non-profit organization that partners with the Russian River Sector of California State Parks to promote, restore, and protect our disappearing natural resources.
Q: What should I do with my garland?
A: Whatever your heart desires. The garland is an invitation to reflect on your relationship with environment. Some may choose to hang it on their door in place of holiday greenery. Others may choose to hang it on their wall as a living reminder. Some may place it on an alter as an earth bundle. Others may choose to gift it as a green bouquet as a symbol of care for another.
Q: What will my wind garland look like?
A: Each garland is unique. Your garland will look similar to the one pictured but will likely take on the unique characteristics of the microhabitat it came from. Because these are rescued branches, each garland will contain several types of branches based on the available.
Q: When will my wind garland arrive?
A: Your wind garland will be ready to ship or pick-up within 2 weeks of ordering. Shipments will arrive via USPS Priority Mail within 2 business days to US residents. Local residents may choose to pick up their garland for free.
Q: How long will my wind garland last?
A: Your garland should stay fresh throughout the holiday season. If it’s hung in direct sunlight or near a heat source, you can extend the life of your greens by misting them with water.
Q: How do I dispose of my wind garland?
A: Although the garland is compostable, the garland will take on another life once it becomes a dried arrangement and you may chose to keep it. If you do choose to dispose of it, the greens are entirely compostable. The plant-dyed cotton ribbon can easily be detached and be repurposed.
Q: I’m a neighbor in Forestville. Why should I donate my greens?
A: By upcycling your branches that might otherwise be considered yard debris, you’re breathing new life into them and keeping them out of the landfill. Your donation will also support the local organizations that aid in the recovery of your community.
